American Medical Association Sends Letter in Support of Trans Troops

BY IN Transgender On April 5, 2018

A recent article by NBC News reports that the American Medical Association sent a letter to Defense Secretary Jim Mattis in support of trans military members. We applaud the AMA for their strong stance in support of trans service members. The letter they sent states ‘”[The White House] mischaracterized and rejected the wide body of peer-reviewed research on the effectiveness of transgender medical care,” and it pushed back against claims that transgender service members would burden the military with “tremendous medical costs.”‘ The AMA goes on to state that the cost associated with medical transition is negligible, and should not be used to keep trans people from serving in the military.
