More Teens Identifying as Trans or Gender Non-Conforming
A recent article released by the AP reported than an estimated 3% of teenagers in the 9th-11th grades identify at transgender or gender non-conforming. This is a huge increase from the previously reported 0.7% – meaning that an estimated 642,850 ages 13-17 in the US identify at transgender or gender non-conforming.
Nic Rider, the lead author of this study, wrote “Youth are rejecting this binary thinking and are asking adults to keep up.” Rider said to improve health disparities affecting transgender teens, doctors should help them feel more comfortable about seeking health care by asking how they identify and if they’ve experienced bullying, discrimination or other victimization. That’s important, Rider said, “because this conveys competence, inclusivity, and caring.”
