Transgender Rights Now Covered Under 1964 Civil Rights Act
In December 2014, the Department of Justice (DOJ) released a memo announcing that gender identity will now be included under Title VII of the 1964 Civil Rights Act. Practically this means that transgender individuals will have a new shelter of protection from employment discrimination. Transgender people in the South – who lack protections under state law – will be protected under federal law. Read the full DOJ memo here.
This development builds on federal strides toward protecting the employment rights of transgender individuals. In 2012, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) announced that it would include discrimination based on gender identity under Title VII of the 1964 Civil Rights Act.
